How a Water Softener Works

How it works.

Step #1: Water enters the top of the water-softener tank and flows down through the resin beads.

Step #2: The resin beads hold a negative charge, which attracts the positively charged minerals in the water (a process known as ion exchange).

Step #3: The mineral deposits cling to the resin beads and the now-softened water exits the tank and flows throughout the house.

superior filtration

A superior filtration solution.

  • Our smart-metered control valve reduces water and salt usage. The on-board computer calculates how much water has flowed through the softener. When it reaches the preprogrammed limit, regeneration automatically begins.
  • Our system includes a power-loss backup and memory for retaining status settings

All your questions answered.

Our water softeners are very reliable and virtually maintenance-free. Other than occasionally adding salt to the brine tank, there’s not much for the homeowner to do. However, it’s recommended that the system be tuned-up and inspected once every year. An annual systems checkup usually runs about $125.

Typically you need to replace the salt crystals every month. And yes! We are able to get your delivery and/or full-service package set on auto-pilot. Learn more about our water softener salt delivery serivce.

A water softener gets rid of "hard" or magnesium and calcium-tainted water.

Here's how it works:

  1. Your home's water enters the top of the water-softener tank and flows through resin beads.
  2. The resin beads hold a negative charge, which attracts the positively charged minerals in the water (a process known as ion exchange).
  3. The mineral deposits cling to the resin beads and the now-softened water exits the tank and flows throughout the house.

Here are some signs that you need a water softener:

  1. Stained or discolored ceramics.
  2. Soap doesn't suds up or clean as it should.
  3. Soap leaves unsightly residue behind on dishes, appliances, and faucets.
  4. You see mineral deposits build up on appliances and dishes.
  5. Your clothes look faded and may become itchy.
  6. Your scalp, skin, and hair feel itchy or dry.
  7. Your appliances aren't working well.
  8. Your water pressure is lessening.

A water softener system can range from $300 to $4,000+ to be bought and installed. Once you have the system in place, you will spend $10-$40 on salt to refill and clean the tank. Soft water can save you money by reducing wear-and-tear on pipes, fixtures, costly appliances, and time spent dealing with these issues.

The best water softener system is the one that works for your home and life. We recommend looking for a smart auto-metered softener system that will reduce your water and salt usage. The NH Tap water softener has an onboard computer that calculates how much water has flowed through the softener. When it reaches the preprogrammed limit, regeneration automatically begins. If the power goes out, our system includes power-loss backup and memory for retaining status settings. To know how much water softener you need, take the average amount of water you use (300 gallons per family is the average) and multiply that number by the grains of hardness in your water that needs to be removed each day.

You must regularly add salt to an ion exchange water softener system to keep it running. Water Softener salt can be purchased in 50 lb bags can be purchased at your local hardware store. While filling up your brine tank with salt crystals is a simple task, we do offer salt delivery and fill-ups with our service plans so you don't have to deal with the heavy bags or just remembering to add it in the first place.

All NH Tap well water softenters include professional installation in the quoted price. A water softener installation is an involved process and is best handled by a licensed plumber (like the ones we use).

To install a water softener, our plumbers will:

  1. Turn off the water supply to the building.
  2. Drain the water lines until no water remains.
  3. Install the proper connections to the machine.
  4. Fill the brine with salt until it is half-full.
  5. Make sure the bypass is closed, and check for leaks by slowly running the water.
  6. Review and complete the start-up session, following the procedure listed.
  7. Remove and dispose of any old equipment.

As always when dealing with water in the home, we feel strongly that an ambitious homeowner can save money in other places, but handling the installation and maintenance of a water softener is best left to the pros.

To avoid getting mold or sludge in your water softener tank, you should clean your unit once a year. Get a small shovel to remove the sludge of salt. Empty the brine tank if it has any mold and scrub with clean water and soap. Want to put your water on autopilot? NH Tap provides an auto maintenance plan that includes this service.

To know how much water softener you need, take the average amount of water you use (300 gallons per family is the average) and multiply that number by the grains of hardness in your water that needs to be removed each day. To find that number, sign up for a free water analysis today!

Softened water is very safe to drink and contains only a slightly elevated sodium level compared to water that hasn't been softened. The addition of this little bit of salt to the water actually makes your home water very tasty. However, if you have concerns about your sodium intake, you may want to also consider installing a Reverse Osmosis drinking water faucet.

That depends on what type of brine tank your water softener has. Refer to your owner's manual to get the amount of water you need.
